How to get an internship in hardware design?

I'm not sure that this is the right section, excuse me if it isn't.
I'm looking for a hardware engineering internship but I have a few questions, what level do I need to be on in order to get accepted or even think about internships?
Do internships cover accommodation and travel expenses?
Where do I search for internships? Do I just use google or is there something specific I should look in?

I guess, you just may need to keep trying contacting different companies and maybe some may need some help.

PS: When I was looking for a job in different country, every morning I searched on internet and sent couple of emails. And after doing this for 3 months I have got lucky.

In which city, state/province, country or even continent do you live? Could be helpful.
Does it cover accommodation and travel expenses? Sometimes.
