Connect thermal pad to GND in footprint

I have a non-rectangular pad (thermal pad) that must be connected. I cannot assign a pin number or anything to it except a net.

In the footprint the net dropdown is empty and I see no way to create any.

I need to connect the pad to pin 5 which is GND.

You have difficult questions We do not use non-standard pads as it may cause problems when designs are imported / exported between different CADs. But, I guess, this could be what you are looking for: Creating a Custom Pad Shape

Thanks. I will just use a rectangular pad then and use silkscreen to indicate the notch area.

That is exactly how we do it - but we do not edit the silkscreen, we adjust mask and solder instead.
