Update U-boot without updating SPL

is it possible to update U-Boot, without updating SPL?
Let say if I erased the U-boot and flashed the new U-boot version, so does SPL will automatically detect the new U-boot?

I have never used SPL, so I am not sure how exactly it works. I can't really help with this, but maybe someone will know?
