component footprint, placement and assembly?

Hello,

Anyone can explain me what is courtyard and if drawing silkscreen is enough to place component correctly ? I saw in the Robert Ferranec's course that the courtyard is not used, so it is confused for me (a beginner). what is the rules for drawing silkscreen if we dont use courtyard? is courtyard mandatory for the assembly?
