Component Placement: Crystal vs Decoupling Cap

A crystal or a decoupling cap?

It doesn't make a big difference either way. It depends on what packages you have - just try to place everything in such way, that the components are most compact.

When I do layout, I personally try to put a little bit higher priority on the decoupling caps, as crystal tracks usually need to be routed a little bit away.
