How to select RAM size efficiently - MCU based design

Hello,

I am baffled by a thought on how to select the RAM size efficiently.
There is design with a MCU with some internal RAM either 32Kb or 18Kb, How to decide which one to use..

Most people have said 32Kb with a view of "the bigger the better" and some of them have said it depends on the code and how much memory it needs in Runtime.
1st answer is not very convincing technically and for the 2nd answer how can you know this until you have the whole code with you.

Any thoughts??

We ideally use a chip which comes up with same footprint but in different configurations (e.g. different memory sizes, peripherals, etc). Then we develop on the biggest configuration and once finished, we know what we need and mass production goes with the cheapest what can fit the software and application requirements.
