I do not know what kind of IR LED you would like to use and what exactly you would like to do with them, but for standard IR LED (e.g. the LEDs used in remote controller), there is no really difference between controlling IR LED or visible LED. Just check maximum and required currents through the LEDs + check what is the voltage drop on the LED.
