Is there any purpose of having a IR transceiver and a separate receiver?

I am not sure what board it is, but I would say, the reasons are: range, frequency and sensitivity. I guess, one is used for IR controller (long range) and the other one is more for bidirectional data transfer (when devices need to be placed close to each other). Have a look at the datasheets, that should help.
